The good, the bad, and the ugly

The Good
After loving the Glam Glow Thirstymud hydrating treatment that Leo bought for me, and hearing Mims rave about the Glam Glow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate treatment, I knew I had to try it. It is after all, one of Glam Glow’s bestsellers. Mims had warned that it would sting a little so I was expecting my face to be on fire or something (I feel like my skin’s pretty sensitive), but it really wasn’t so bad. It did sting, but when I moved from applying it in the bathroom, to sitting in front of the fan (blasting cool air directly at my face), the stinging feeling went away. I left the black gritty mud mask on my face for about 10 minutes and then washed it off in a slow circular scrubbing motion for that exfoliating effect. After just one use, my face felt tighter (I imagine a mild facelift might feel like this) and it felt so clean and soft. I love it but now I’m surfing the Glam Glow website and I’m pretty convinced I need the Supermud clearingtreatment for stubborn blackheads on my nose. Help!
Not the ambassador for Super Mud unfortunately
Magic in a pot
The bad
So I saw this Makeup Eraser cloth on a Buzzfeed article and I thought, “Ooh a cloth that I can use and reuse and will magically remove all my makeup with just water”. Sounds too good to be true right? And yup, it is too good to be true. So disclaimer: I was in a rush to remove my makeup so I’m not sure if I was doing it right and I didn’t read the instructions. I ran some water over it and the cloth appeared to be magically not absorbing* much water, then, I rubbed it on my face.  The cloth is soft to the touch and feels gentle being smooshed around my face, and the powder and blush I was wearing seemed to come off (but I don’t think my face powder and blush are really that resilient) but my mascara and eyeliner took much more rubbing. And even then I had panda eyes! I’m not one to call it quits though – I’m going to dedicate a bit more time to letting it soak up water (maybe have to try warm water because that’s what other people seem to be using) and then try it again. But so far, I’m MEH about it.

*Update: So I used it again (this is an edit from my initial post a few days after) and it seemed to absorb more water, and my makeup came off clean enough (some eyeshadow sparkles appeared to remain though) but I really wasn't wearing heavy duty makeup so still on the fence. Double MEH.

The ugly

I can see again

Once upon a time, possibly when I was 10 or 11, I became short-sighted or myopic, and needed to wear spectacles. Of course I looked like a total dork. Small lenses, big lenses, thick frames, skinny frames, no frames - I tried them all. And looked horrible in all.
Gather around students.
I never really felt comfortable wearing specs so I started wearing contacts during the day when I went to school and while it felt much more comfortable, I guess I really wished that I didn't have that additional hassle to put them on and take them off, and ensure they were clean so I didn't get an eye infection. Finally, in March last year, Mousie and I decided to try for Lasik since we felt like our degrees had more or less stabilised and it would be a great sister bonding experience.

We decided to go with Dr. Jacob Cheng from Eagle Eye Centre because the rates there weren't crazy expensive (my friend paid $8000!! while we paid half of that) and my sister had heard good reviews of this clinic (and also because this hottie doctor wasn't available I think). We booked our first appointment to see Dr. Cheng and were advised not to wear contact lenses for a week prior.

At our first appointment, they applied some eye-drops to dilate our eyes then we went through a bunch of tests run by nurses to scan our eyeballs to see if we were eligible for the surgery. Basically, what I understood was that I would need pretty meaty corneas so that they could slice away at it to make the eyes see good. Science pro right here.

When the good doctor concluded that our corneas were indeed fat enough to be spliced, we were slotted in that very afternoon for the surgery, once the dilation had gone away. Mousie tightly wrapped her sunnies around her face because she had major light sensitivity while I just wore my sunnies and exited the hospital pretending to be a celebrity who had just had plastic surgery.

We went back later that afternoon and Mousie's eyes were still dilated because she's just the best at everything she does, including maintaining eye dilation. Dr. Cheng decided it was ok to proceed on her so the nurses gave us some pills, one of which was Valium, to calm our jitters. Mousie, normally anxious and tightly wound floated like a cloud, while I just felt sleepy. We laughed a lot wearing our hospital gowns, shoes and shower caps.
Pre-surgery feeling sleepy while trying to rock the shower cap look
I don't even remember this. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Then I died.

Ok, I didn't die. It was time for my surgery so I went into the sterile room, and lay on a bed surrounded by machines and had the big zappy laser pointer that was going to cut my freaking eyeballs pointed at my face. I believe they clamped my head down but honestly I kinda blocked a lot out because TRAUMA. I went from kind of sleepy to extremely tense and scared. The doctor pressed something firmly down with a lot of pressure over my eyeball, I presume some suction thing to keep my eyeball in place before the laser cutting. With that, the sight went from that eye and I went dead quiet. That feeling was so foreign and so uncomfortable to me I might as well have been abducted by aliens and experimented on. The suction held on for about 30 seconds, there was a burning smell (my eyeball being cooked by aliens), and then they removed the suction thing. One eye down, one more to go. My heart was racing and it felt like it took FOREVER when in fact each eye probably took less than a minute.
Those are my toes curling from the fear
Mousie was totally floating
And then she prepared to give birth
After Dr. Cheng had completed both eyes, they helped me sit up and asked me to tell them the time from a large clock that was about 2 metres away. I was so flummoxed that aliens were asking me for the time, then it dawned on me. I could see. Not perfectly, but quite well! Hallelujah I wasn't blind!! Then out of nowhere, someone whipped out a camera and said, 'CHEESE!' and took possibly the ugliest photo* of me ever. They later gifted me this photo in hard copy. So they give you sight and then make you see the ugliest thing ever. That seems a little cruel.
Immediately after surgery. It looks like I'm crying because I totally felt like I should have!!
OMG this post has run really long so I'm going to stop here but I'll write another post about the healing process in the next one! Sorry to leave with such an awful picture LOL! Thanks for reading!

* I was unable to locate the picture which is seriously a pity because I looked SO bad and you would have definitely enjoyed the laugh but the above one is probably second runner up in terms of ugliness so you're welcome.

Advanced control

I really enjoy reviewing things I use and sharing it with you guys because it makes me feel like I'm doing y'all a service (and good service is totally important don't you think?) and because then I make the stuff that I like a little bit more popular. This next thing I'm going to share with you is near and dear to my heart, because I literally apply it somewhere close to my heart. And also because without it, I might have those unsightly underarm sweat patches. You know, the ones that seem to appear mostly when you're giving the most important presentation of your life, and you have to lift your arm to point out something and for some reason you're in a kinda fitted blue cotton top and the colour around your pits is now a darker blue and everyone is giggling and it's like a nightmare you just can't wake up from.

INTRODUCING MITCHUM ANTI-PERSPIRANT AND DEODORANT!!!

Such control.
I use the roll on in the powder fresh scent (I'm trying Waterlily soon as you can see from the picture above) which I found in Boots when I was in London and it's really affordable so I decided I'd give it a try and I will be honest, this gave me some mad advanced control of my armpit perspiration. Seriously, this shizz makes your sweat glands just say ciao for now until you wash it off. It's got some insane staying power and I don't know whether that means I'm going to get armpit cancer but hey, at least I don't smell. I think this is a total service for Singaporean people because it's the tropics and it is motherfreaking hot outside.
Hey Mitchum, I've got a rebrand suggestion, let's talk.
I think the only down side is that if you apply too much, it can form a whitish layer on your pits that makes it look like you've got mad armpit dandruff or are possibly becoming dessicated from the armpits out. Be warned. But there is honestly no down side to smelling powder fresh (or like a waterlily - to be confirmed)

The local tourist

Being a snobby snob face, I tend to have some elitist beliefs about the things we can find in Singapore, versus the things from overseas. For example, I think that Kit Kat from the UK > Kit Kat found in Singapore (I think it's made in Malaysia and before you get all what-a-bitch-she's-an-anti-Malaysia-and-Malaysians-butthole, please note that my father is Malaysian so let's not get so hyped up. Sheesh, you need to eat less chocolate).

However, I am not turning my nose up at this new local brand - Controlled Commodity makes understated shirts for men and women, and while my style is normally more akin to that of a mental patient, I was impressed with how well tailored the shirts are, and how flattering they are for a shorty like myself. So yeah, if you like well made shirts that aren't the usual run of the mill design (who wouldn't???), I'd definitely recommend you check them out.

Back when I was in high school, I was the captain of the cheerleading squad, and I worked so hard to get my team to the cheerleading championships with a brand new routine after finding out that our practiced routine was actually stolen from another school. No wait. That wasn't me.

This was me.
Life sucks when you can't spell.
Anyway, today's white sneaker + pleated skirt (well in this case, dress) combo makes me think of cheerleader attire hence the throwback to a wonderful time when teen movies were all the rage (She's All That and 10 Things I Hate About You were my jam) and we thought it would be super cool to dress up and write 'cool' slogans on a Magna-doodle.
In case it wasn't obvious.
I wasn't a cheerleader obviously, but hey, at least two-thirds of the mouse squad were. That's like practically being a cheerleader through association (but one who was just completely devoid of rhythm).
They accept me even though I can't dance
Thanks for reading, have a wonderful weekend full of cheer. Gimme a Y for Yay!

You'll be in my heart... Maybe

I'm going on vacation to California tomorrow so I'll be taking a break from posting as I will be too busy seeing sights, hearing sounds and eating food, although mostly it'll be the food thing. But I'll be back and while I wish it'll be with a haul of great stuff, it is unlikely because mommy says money doesn't grown on trees (even though paper comes from trees so she's clearly not aware of science) and also because I'm going with my warden (the boo) who will nag my ear off and then some if I spend any money unnecessarily.

I shall bid you adieu temporarily but like the terminator (I'm the shoppinator), I'LL BE BACK!

Animal instincts

Today's outfit is very youthful... or childish... Whatever. It's a bit more twee than I'm used to but I do love a good theme - I am pretty sure you can guess what the theme of today was but if you need a hint... Well, I'll just tell you... It's ANIMALS, you silly head!

On the topic of animals, show some love, save some animals today. Please adopt a dog or donate money or your time to a shelter. The following are some suggestions:
  • Save Our Street Dogs: See the "our" in the name? It's because these dogs actually belong to all of us in Singapore. Be patriotic and save your fellow Singaporeans!
  • Animal Lovers League: This site is pretty well designed and their logo is people holding hands with animals. Just awesome.
  • Action for Singapore Dogs: Take action! Be a hero!
  • Animal Concerns Research & Education Society: This hardworking group does so much for all the other animals in Singapore that don't get the same kind of love and attention as dogs and cats. This group helps the animals that we don't typically go 'awww' over (like snakes, lizards and monkeys) because even the gross ones deserve saving. Plus they save us from the scary animals we otherwise wouldn't know how to deal with. Support them if you a) love animals indiscriminately, b) don't want monkeys roaming around your house, c) really enjoy watching people try to catch Komodo Dragons with some trouble.
Thanks for reading, thanks for saving lives.
